Whilst selling and buying on our platform is pretty safe, it is still very important to take the necessary precautions when selling any item on the platform.
Please take a moment to read the following tips when selling an item.
The tips will help you avoid being scammed.
- Unless you are paid in cash, always wait for the payment from the buyer to clear before handing over any goods. Remember that the bank can still in some certain situations (particularly with overseas payments) demand a payment back even after initially clearing a payment. Talk to your bank for more information on this.
- If you are being paid in cash by the buyer, make sure you study the notes for signs of counterfeit by feeling the paper, studying the printing, checking the watermark and the metallic thread. You can get more information on how to check for counterfeit money at the Bank of England web site
- If you are sending your item through the post to the buyer, always obtain proof of posting and ensure that the item you are sending to the buyer is adequately insured against loss up to the full value of the item.
The Post Office or whatever organisation you are using to send the parcel can provide you with a “Certificate of Posting” for free, giving compensation for low value items.
- If you are going to receive payment for your item through PayPal, make sure you meet the requirements of paypal’s seller protection scheme. This includes retaining proof of delivery which can be tracked online.
Do not just rely on an email confirmation that you have received funds as this may have been faked. Always log into your account to confirm you have been paid by the buyer. Type paypal’s address directly into your browser (don’t follow links in any email) to check. Also note that PayPal does NOT hold funds pending delivery of an item.
- Avoid like the plaque any situation where the buyer offers to pay you much more than you advertised your item for, asking you to refund the difference to his business partner or friend. This is usually a scam
- Be extremely cautious if the buyer is asking you to communicate directly by email rather than using the babyactivitytoys messaging service. It is important that the whole conversation is done through our platform so that you can have all the evidence in one location if things do go wrong
Whatever the case, the bottom line is …. Don’t let your common sense be clouded by what looks like an unbelievable bargain. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Please note:
BabyActivityToys does NOT handle any payments for transactions on the site and therefore cannot guarantee any payments made. If you receive a message asking you to make a payment via BabyActivityToys or claiming that BabyActivityToys will protect your payment it is fake!!. Please report it to us immediately.
